Google Currency Converter - Peeping In On Your Finances?

July 18th, 2005

Yeah, that’s right! I said it - “Peeping in on your finances”.

Does the new Google Currency Converter actually peer into your financial ongoings?

Probably not - yet…

What I meant by that statement - is that Google, using all of thier conglomerated information about you (through the various ‘Google Tools’ that you use) certainly has the ability to tie in any ‘currency conversions’ you do and add that to your file.

‘So what?’ you say…

Well, let’s say you have a nice nest of savings, and you want to diversify and increase the risk factor for a comfortable percentage of your egg basket, while trying to minimize the take that Uncle Sam gets - so you and your better half (or not) decide to invest internationally…

The first thing you do once the decision has been made - is that you’ll use your wonderfully handy and trusty Google Toolbar to ‘Google’ certain key phrases that you are interested in relating to that topic. Of course, for everyone’s betterment, Google will track and record your searches - and destinations, whether they are ‘freindly’ or not (come on… you clicked a website listed in thier results… you think they DON’T track that???).
You may have looked at least ten sites to find exactly what you want, right. Well, the big G can tell how long you were at each one, und thus pretty much determine if you liked the site or not (thus - they can tell how you think… your ’surfing habits’). And remember, these sites have information that might not exactly comply with the rules and regulations of the US taxman - but that’s your goal, right? To find loopholes… using Google.

Next, once you’ve found a website that has fulfilled your desires, you’ll want to know how much you’re going to make on your new little ‘hidden investment’. That’s where the new converter comes in… so you simply go to the - again, handy and trusty - Google Currency Converter to do some figurin’, and you’ve got your answers. And so does Google.

And then one day, for some reason, Uncle Sam is particularly interested in YOUR finances (did you piss your neighbour off?) and decides to do a little diggin. BUT, (this is purely speculation), the ever-so-smart-and-resourceful taxman now has a new weapon at his disposal. Google. No, he won’t search Google to see if you’ve been naughty or nice… he’ll just call in the info guy at Google, and ask him for your ‘file’.

‘Case-closed’ says the judge - and YOU lose.

Is Google evil?

I don’t know, but why do they need a file on ME anyway.

I wish I had a giant eraser.
